OMAHA, Neb. (January 4, 2022) – The AAU Wrestling Winter Nationals are back in a big way with estimates on track to have a record number of participants ready to hit the mat this weekend in Omaha, Nebraska starting on Saturday, January 9, 2022.
Athletes will be filling up Ralston Arena for another year of competition. Located in the heart of the metropolitan Omaha area, Ralston Arena is the home of the Omaha Lancers hockey team.
This widely anticipated national championship attracts wrestlers of all ages with five age divisions starting at six and under, all the way up to 15 year old athletes. Wrestlers will be traveling from all different states to showcase their talents in Omaha.
“Despite last year being a Covid year, we had record numbers and a great tournament,” said Daniel Vacha, Tournament Director. “I'm pleased to see the Covid safety issues are still in place, but we have no Covid restrictions on us this year, so it will be business as usual.”
Wrestlers have a chance to head home with extra hardware this year as the tournament will be awarding Chains for Champions of each weight class, trophies to the 2nd and 3rd place finishers, as well as medals for the top six places and Team Awards for each age group competing.
Some of the wrestlers to keep an eye on this year as they go for three-plus wins are Ignacio Villasenor, Dreshaun Staton-Ross and Kaylyn Harrill. Villasenor comes in from Colorado and represented Team USA Men’s Freestyle U15 team while bringing home gold in the Pan American Championships last year. Staton-Ross travels from Iowa and won the 2021 Iowa AAU Kids State Championship. Harrill calls Nebraska home and became a high school All-American and National Champion in 2021.
All mats will be streaming live on FloWrestling. FloWrestling can be streamed from your desktop, television or mobile.
