KINGSPORT, Tenn. & DES MOINES, Iowa (March 29, 2023) – AAU Wrestling is preparing for a busy action with nonstop wrestling this weekend in Tennessee and Iowa. The AAU Elementary School National Duals will take place in Kingsport, Tennessee, while the AAU Middle School and Freshman/Sophomore National Duals will be going on in Des Moines, Iowa. Teams will go head to head on the mat for ultimate supremacy and an AAU National Championships.
Hosted by Visit Kingsport, the Meadow View Convention Center in Kingsport, Tennessee will be home to the AAU Elementary School Duals for the 25th year. With 13 teams and around 250 athletes traveling from eight different states, this event will bring the best of the best from the elementary school divisions.
This event has always been the start of something special for young wrestlers. 2019 saw one of the most loaded weight classes ever with the 80 lbs group. Wrestlers such as Jax Forrest, Sam Herring, Rocco Cassioppi, William Anderson, and Jayce Paridon all went head to head at the event as they began their run in AAU Wrestling. This year will be no different.
The weight classes for the event will be: 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 108, 116, 125, 140, 170, and HWT up to 220 lbs. Weigh-ins will take place on March 31 in the morning with competition beginning on Friday at 4:00 in the afternoon.
Out in Des Moines, Iowa, 6th – 8th graders will go head to head at the 2023 AAU Lee Pamulak Middle School National Duals. Twenty teams will take the mats at HyVee Hall with competition set to start on Saturday, April 1 in the morning.
The AAU Middle School Duals having been running for 28 years strong. Returning as the champions from 2022 will be Team Iowa Black. Will the champs be able to defend their crown, or will we see a new champion atop the standings?
Teams will have 20 weights, with 5 alternates. The weight classes for the event will be: 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 250. Pool wrestling begins Saturday with the championship bracket opening up on Sunday, April 2.
Also taking the mats at HyVee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa will be the AAU Freshman/Sophomore National Duals. For the first time ever, HyVee Hall will have 38 mats down at one time. Between the Middle School and the Freshman/Sophomore events, there will be a total of 110 teams with around 1,400 wrestlers seeking national championships.
Team Iowa Black also went home in the Freshman/Sophomore division with the crown and they are back to continue their reign. Nineteen teams in total will wrestler during the AAU Freshman/Sophomore National Duals, but they won’t be the only ones wrestling during the weekend.
Eight Junior/Senior teams, 26 Girls Youth teams, and 36 Girls High School teams will be attending the tournament wrestling for an AAU Team Championship.
Teams in the 2023 AAU Freshman/Sophomore National Duals will consist of 15 weights with five alternates. The weight classes for the event will be: 98, 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, HWT. (2lb. NFHS Growth Allowance).
Competition will take place on Saturday morning. All Teams will be seeded in team pools based on past finish by team. First time teams will be randomly seeded. (Size of pools will be subject to adjustment based on total number of teams entered.) After pool wrestling, teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets based on pool performance and then on point differential seeding. Championship matches will take place Sunday.

Awards
At the 2023 AAU Elementary School National Duals, AAU Championship Medals will be awarded to the top eight teams and those individuals who have wrestled a minimum of five matches and have 3 losses or less. Also, the 1st and 2nd place teams in each consolation bracket will receive awards.
For the 2023 Middle School National Duals, AAU Championship medals for top teams and individuals & individuals who attain All American status. Team Trophies/Plaques for 1st through 4th place plus consolation bracket champions.
In the 2023 AAU Freshman/Sophomore National Duals, the top 4 teams will receive team awards. Consolation bracket champions will also receive team awards. National Championship individual medals will be awarded to team members and individuals.
